Lines of Research

CLINICAL AND PHYSIOPATHOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF HUMAN RETROVIROSIS AND OTHER ASSOCIATED VIRUSES

This line of research aims to study HIV-AIDS and infection by HTLV-1 and HTLV-2 viruses, Arboviruses, SARS-COV2 and Tuberculosis, involving aspects of epidemiology, immunopathology, diagnosis, comorbidities, quality of life and treatment. There are international collaborations in this line of research.

FUNCTIONAL ASSESSMENT AND REHABILITATION OF CHRONIC DISEASES

This line of research investigates the processes related to physical-functional assessment and the repercussions of individual and collective interventions that pursue the promotion, prevention, and rehabilitation of people with chronic diseases. The main objective is to explore the processes that involve analysis and evaluation of dysfunctions, methods, and clinical intervention resources in dysfunctions of patients with chronic diseases, involving clinical trials, systematic reviews and meta-analyses.

CLINICAL INVESTIGATION AND EPIDEMIOLOGY OF ASTHMA

The main aspects of this line of research are the clinical and epidemiological investigation of respiratory and allergic diseases, the identification and prevention of future risks for asthma, rhinitis and comorbidities, and the study of health-based evidence.

CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE, ARTERIAL HYPERTENSION AND CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES

This line of research includes investigations related to Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), Systemic Arterial Hypertension (SAH) and Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD).

NON-ALCOHOLIC STEATO HEPATITIS AND ACUTE AND CHRONIC HEPATITIS AND ITS COMPLICATIONS

This line of research includes projects involving the most frequent liver diseases. Hepatitis by virus B and C and the Nonalcoholic Steato-Hepatitis NAFLD are currently considered a public health problem due to its high morbidity rates.

STUDY OF FETAL MALFORMATIONS AND METABOLIC AND INFECTIOUS DISEASES IN PEDIATRICS

Etio-epidemiological, clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic studies of infections in children with the aim of quantifying the burden of disease, identifying the profile of agents, describing the most relevant clinical characteristics, and presenting the best diagnosis. This line of research also studies maternal changes that can interfere with fetal formation, development, and well-being, as well as the evolution of pregnancy itself and maternal risk factors such as infectious diseases, hypertension, diabetes, thrombophilia, immunological diseases, among others.

STUDY OF PAIN

This line of research aims to develop clinical and experimental research involving pain pathophysiology and its organic repercussions, pain assessment and measurement, validation of instruments for pain management, acute and chronic pain and immune system, pain and movement control, sleep disorders, psychological and psychiatric comorbidities and pain, memory and pain, clinical studies (pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions, regional blocks and neuromodulation) and epidemiological studies in acute and chronic pain syndromes, pain education, studies to assess adherence to treatment, pharmacovigilance, and monitoring of long-term adverse effects and use of electrophysiological resources to guide treatment.

PHYSIOLOGY OF CENTRAL HISTAMINERGIC PATHWAYS, CHRONIC PATHOLOGIES, AND RARE DISEASES

This line of research aims to investigate aspects of Neurosciences related to Psychopharmacology, Genetics, Neuroimaging, Phenomenology, and prognosis of clinical conditions; neurological and psychiatric aspects of chronic pathologies; and rare diseases. This line is part of the Bahia State Program for Comprehensive Rehabilitation in Rare Diseases and strives to determine the epidemiology, risk factors, prognosis, treatment, and aspects related to the quality of life of rare diseases in the state of Bahia, other locations in Brazil, and other countries in scientific cooperation.

MOOD DISORDERS, ANXIETY, COGNITION AND HEALTH-RELATED FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE QUALITY OF LIFE

This line of research comprises research on pathophysiological mechanisms, diagnostic, clinical, therapeutic, etiological, and psychosocial aspects of mood disorders, anxiety, and psychiatric comorbidities with clinical illnesses. It also includes studies on the interrelationship between aspects of the Human Sciences, including Bioethics, in the health-disease process, involving minorities and people who use psychoactive substances. Another objective is to develop and validate psychometric instruments that assess the quality of life and subjective phenomena experienced by patients, social groups, and workers (including health care).

TECHNOLOGIES APPLIED TO EDUCATION AND HEALTH

This line of research aims to investigate the use of technologies applied to health and education. This endeavor stems from a partnership between PPgMS and the Telehealth service from the Bahia State Department of Health (SESAB), referring to the TELEFMB/UFBA project. It includes the development of applications for health and health education, including those for self-management in health by the Unified Health System (SUS) users. This line of research also intends to include innovative actions to teach telemedicine and telehealth at the undergraduate and residency levels, as well as to cover discussions on ethical, legal, and juridical aspects related to the use of health technologies.
